It's Hip To Be Square
Amongst the host of prints to grace the runway over the last several decades, which might one single out as the most popular? If you asked us, checks would be our answer. Perhaps due to their genderless, versatile and malleable nature, their recurrence, not just on the runway but also in everyday fashion tells us that they’re a perennial favourite amongst designers and consumers. No matter your personality, checks have the propensity to adapt to your own personal style. This is evident through its incorporation by punks and lumberjacks into their wardrobe, as well as preppy upper-middle class school girls (a la the iconic 90’s film Clueless) and rock musicians such as the members of No Doubt and Pearl Jam.
This season, it’s checks galore. And true to its flexible nature, there is something for everyone. Thom Browne has provided his rendition of the classic print in his signature brand of preppy-cum-peculiar; Chitose Abe didn’t shy away from using the material in all its glory at Sacai; and Alessandro Dell' Acqua for No.21 encouraged a mix-and-match approach by combining various kinds of checks together or with other statement pieces.
